Sonu Nigam is a renowned Indian playback singer. He was born on July 30, 1973 in Faridabad, Haryana, to Agam Kumar Nigam and Shobha Nigam. His father Agam Kumar was a popular stage singer in North India.

Sonu attended DJ Tyler School in Faridabad. His father was his first music trainer. He has also learnt music from Ustad Mohammad Tahir in Delhi. Sonu set foot on the stage at the age of three. Sonu’s first public performance was with his father. He accompanied his father and sang the Mohammed Rafi song Kya Hua Tera Vaada from the movie Hum Kisise Kum Nahin. He used to accompany his father on his singing assignments in weddings and parties. He participated in and won several music competitions in his teenage years. He acted in movies like Kaamchor (1982), Ustadi Ustad Se (1982), Hum Se Hai Zamana (1983), Taqdeer (1983) and Betaab (1983) as a child artist.

He came to Mumbai at the age of 18 and started joined a distance learning graduate program. He started his career singing covers of Mohammad Rafi songs. His first movie as a playback singer was the film Janum (1990). His first big break came with the 1996 film Bewafa Sanam in which he sang the song “Accha Sila Diya Tune”. Later he hosted ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa”, a singing competition on Zee TV which made him popular. The songs like “Sandeshe Aate Hai” from the film Border (1997) and “Yeh Dil Deewana” from the film Pardes (1997) sung by him made him famous among the public.

In addition to many Hindi movies, Sonu has also sung for Tamil and Kannada movies. He has won various awards for playback singing. Sonu won his first Filmfare Best Male Playback Singer Award in 2003 for the film Saathiya.

Sonu Nigam has also released several pop albums of his own including Kismat (1998), Mausam (1999), Deewana (1999), Jaan (2000), Yaad (2001), Chanda Ki Doli (2005) etc.

He hosted the show ‘Kisme Kitna Hai Dum’ on Star Plus and a radio programme called ‘Life Ki Dhun with Sonu Nigam’ on Radiocity 91 FM. He was one of the judges of the first and second seasons of Indian Idol, a singing competition on Sony Entertainment Television channel.

Sonu has also acted in various Bollywood films like Jaani Dushman (2002), Kash Aap Hamare Hote (2003), Love In Nepal (2004) etc.

Sonu has 2 sisters, Meenal and Neekita. Neekita is also a singer. Sonu got married to Madhurima on February 15, 2002 and has one son called Neevan.

He was one of the judges of the show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'IL Champs 2007 on Zee TV.
